The Endocrinology Nurse Practitioner (ENP) practices in the inpatient and outpatient settings at the Denver VA Medical Center. The ENP is academically and clinically prepared to perform a broad spectrum of patient care services at the expert level. NP's with licensed independent privilege status have been granted clinical privileges by the Medical Staff and practice autonomously with consultation as necessary. The Endocrine Nurse Practitioner provides primary care to adults followed in the Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Section and consultations to outlying VA hospitals and clinics within the VISN. Primary care includes assessment, diagnosis, treatment and outcome measures of healthcare problems of Type 1 and complex Type 2 diabetics, as well as patients with thyroid cancer and pituitary tumors. This includes the following: initiating and adjusting therapeutic regimens, performing histories and physicals, ordering diagnostic and therapeutic test/studies, initiating consults and referrals, and prescribing medications/supplies in accordance with VA policy, VA formulary, State regulations and scope of practice. Delineated privileges for this position also include consultation for inpatient diabetes and endocrine care as well as outpatient care of diabetic and other endocrine patients. In addition to providing primary health care, the ENP serves as a consultant to both nursing as well as medical staff for patients with complex treatment or care needs. The ENP works collaboratively with other interdisciplinary team members in providing quality care, and patient education, participating in research activities. The ENP serves on medical center, VIISN and /or national committees and assists in the development, evaluation and communication of policies and standards of advanced nursing practice.

Job Requirements


Education, training, experience:

1. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and accredited by one of the accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
2. Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN (or bachelor's degree in a related field), or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field.
3. Applicant must be a graduate of a school of professional Adult, Family or Nurse Practitioner program approved by the appropriate State agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies: American Nurses Association, National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
4. Two to three years advanced clinical experience preferred.
